Musnad Ahmad 2853

It was narrated that Ibn ‘Abbas (رضي الله عنه) said: It was said to the Prophet (ﷺ) when he had finished at Badr: You should pursue the caravan, for sure there is nothing to prevent you capturing it. al-‘Abbas (رضي الله عنه), who was among the prisoners in his chains, called out to him: You will never be able to do that. The Prophet (ﷺ) said to him: “Why not?” He said: Because Allah promised you one of the two groups, and He has given you what He promised you.
