Musnad Ahmad 4072

Musnad of Abdullah bin Mas'ood

It was narrated that 'Abdullah bin 'Utbah said: Some people came to 'Abdullah bin Mas'ood and asked him about a man who married a woman and did not name a dowry, then he died before consummating the marriage with her. He did not give any response to that, so they went away. Then they came back and asked him again and he said: I shall speak concerning it on the basis of my own opinion; if I get it right then it is by the help of Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, and if I get it wrong then it is from me. She is entitled to a dowry like that of her peers, she has the right of inheritance and she has to observe the 'iddah. A man of Ashja' stood up and said: I bear witness that the Prophet (ﷺ) issued a verdict to that effect. He said: Bring me someone to testify to that with you. And Abul-Jarrah testified to that.
