Musnad Ahmad 1440

Musnad Abu Ishaq Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas

It was narrated from Sa’d that The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) entered upon him to visit him when he was sick, when he was in Makkah. He said: “O Messenger of Allah, I am afraid that I will die in the land from which I migrated as Sa"d bin Khawlah died. Pray to Allah to heal me.” He said: “O Allah, heal Sa"d, O Allah, heal Sa"d, O Allah, heal Sa"d." He said: “O Messenger of Allah, I have a great deal of wealth, and I have no heir except one daughter. Can I bequeath all my wealth (to charity)?” He said: “No." He said: “Can I bequeath two thirds of it?” He said: “No,ʻʼ He said: “Can I bequeath half of it?” He said: “No." He said: “Can I bequeath one third?” He said: “One third, and one third is a lot. If you spend from your wealth, it is a charity for you; if you spend from your wealth on your dependents, it is a charity for you; if you spend from your wealth on your family, it is a charity for you. If you leave your family something that is enough for them to live on that is better than leaving them to ask people for help.”
