The Qur’an

God’s words, preserved

The Qur’an (“the recitation”) is the holy book of Islam. Muslims believe it is the literal word of God, revealed to Muhammad ﷺ over 23 years in Arabic. It was memorised by many of his companions and written down during his lifetime, and it has been recited in the same words ever since. Millions of people today know it entirely by heart.

It has 114 chapters (surahs) and covers belief in God, stories of earlier prophets, worship, ethics, law, and reflections on nature and the human soul. It often asks the reader to think: “Do they not reflect?”

A translation is an explanation of the meaning, not the Qur’an itself, but it is a wonderful place to start. A good first reading is the opening chapter, Al-Fatihah, followed by a short chapter such as Maryam (Mary).

Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured

Qur'an 13:28
