Islamic belief (iman) rests on six things, taught by the Prophet ﷺ when the angel Gabriel asked him “What is faith?”:
- God: One, without partner, the Creator of everything.
- The angels: beings of light who carry out God’s commands, such as Gabriel who brought revelation.
- The scriptures: the Torah given to Moses, the Psalms to David, the Gospel to Jesus, and the Qur’an to Muhammad ﷺ.
- The prophets and messengers: including Adam, Noah, Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, David, Solomon, Jonah, John the Baptist, Jesus and Muhammad ﷺ.
- The Last Day: everyone will be raised and answer for their life, before a God who is perfectly just and abundantly merciful.
- Divine decree: nothing happens outside God’s knowledge and will, while people remain responsible for their choices.
These beliefs give a Muslim’s life its direction: gratitude in good times, patience in hard times, and hope that no effort for good is ever wasted.
