Common questions

Honest answers to honest questions

It is natural to have questions, especially if most of what you have heard about Islam came from the news. Here are short answers to a few of the most common ones. You can find more in our Q&A, or ask us yourself.

Do Muslims worship a different God?

No. Muslims worship the God of Abraham, Moses and Jesus. “Allah” is the Arabic word for God.

What does Islam say about violence and terrorism?

Islam forbids killing innocent people. The Qur’an says that whoever kills one innocent soul, it is as if they killed all of humanity, and whoever saves one life, it is as if they saved all of humanity (5:32). Muslims are among the main victims of extremist groups, and scholars across the world condemn them.

How does Islam view women?

The Qur’an addresses men and women equally as believers who will be rewarded equally for their deeds. It gave women rights to own property, inherit, consent to marriage and keep their own names. Muslims, like everyone, do not always live up to their teachings, and those failures are cultural rather than religious.

Do I have to be Arab, or change my name or culture?

No. Islam is for every people and culture. You keep your name (unless it has a bad meaning), your language and your good customs.

What if I have doubts?

Questions and reflection are encouraged. The Qur’an repeatedly invites people to think, observe and reason. Take your time.
